A Simple Checklist to See How Your Gifted Child Is Feeling
Jul 05, 2025
When people think about gifted kids, they usually think about smart stuff like reading early or getting good grades. But being gifted isn’t just about school. Gifted kids also feel things in a big way. They might get upset easily and worry a lot. It’s not uncommon for gifted kids to be super hard on themselves either. That’s why it’s important to check in on how they’re doing emotionally.
Here’s a simple checklist you can use to see how your gifted child is feeling inside.
Are they sharing their feelings?
Gifted kids often have strong emotions, but they don’t always talk about them. Ask yourself: Do they tell you when they’re sad, mad, or worried? Do they draw, write, or play to show how they feel? If they keep everything inside or have big blow-ups, they might need more help learning how to share their feelings.
Can they calm down when they’re upset?
All kids get upset sometimes. But can your child calm down after something goes wrong? If they stay upset for a long time or have a hard time feeling better, they may need help learning ways to feel more in control of their emotions.
Do they have friends or trusted adults?
Some gifted kids feel different from other kids. That can make it hard to make friends. Think about whether your child has at least one friend or an adult they trust. If they’re often alone or say things like “nobody gets me,” they might be feeling lonely.
Are they too hard on themselves?
Gifted kids sometimes want to be perfect all the time. They might get upset if they make even a small mistake. If your child seems scared to try new things or is never happy with their work, they might need help learning it’s okay not to be perfect.
Do they still feel curious and happy?
Gifted kids are usually full of questions and love to learn. If your child still laughs, plays, and enjoys their favorite hobbies, that’s a good sign. But if they seem bored, grumpy, or not interested in much, something might be bothering them.
Being there makes a difference!
Gifted kids don’t just need harder schoolwork. They also need help with their big feelings. By checking in often, you can notice when they’re struggling and help them feel safe and supported. You don’t have to fix everything. Just being there and listening can make a big difference.
